Aftercare Guidance From Our Clinical Team
A Bright Smiles doctor or clinical team member reviews the most important instructions and what to expect after teeth whitening.
Sensitivity Is Common and Usually Temporary
Temporary tooth sensitivity is one of the most common effects of peroxide whitening. It may be more noticeable with stronger products or longer contact time. Follow the exact concentration, wear time, and frequency Bright Smiles prescribed; using more gel or wearing trays longer does not safely speed treatment.
The overall trend matters: expected early symptoms should remain manageable and then improve. Pain or swelling that becomes substantially worse after beginning to improve, new drainage or a foul taste, fever, or symptoms that interfere with normal swallowing or breathing need prompt evaluation.
Gum or Soft-Tissue Irritation
Whitening gel can irritate gums, lips, or cheeks if it contacts them. Wipe away excess gel and use only the amount instructed. Stop and contact us for significant burning, persistent white patches on the gums, ulceration, or swelling.
Your individual treatment can differ in extent, materials, medicines, and healing needs. Follow any specific instructions Bright Smiles gave you for teeth whitening, and contact us rather than guessing if your experience is substantially different from what is described here.
Using Take-Home Trays
Place only the directed amount of gel in each tooth area of the tray. Seat the tray as shown and clean it with cool or lukewarm water after use. Keep whitening materials away from children and pets and store them according to product instructions.

Food, Drinks & Staining
Teeth can pick up new surface stains over time. Limiting tobacco and frequent darkly colored drinks can help maintain results. You do not need to follow extreme or nutritionally restrictive 'white diets' unless Bright Smiles gave you a specific short-term recommendation.
Advance your diet according to comfort and the mechanical limits of the treatment—not simply because the area no longer hurts. For teeth whitening, a restoration, appliance, implant, surgical site, or healing tissue can still be vulnerable before it feels vulnerable.
Crowns, Veneers & Fillings Do Not Whiten Like Natural Teeth
Whitening changes the color of natural teeth but does not predictably lighten crowns, veneers, fillings, or implant restorations. Existing restorations may look different after natural teeth lighten; discuss replacement timing rather than trying to bleach restorations.

Do Not Mix Whitening Systems
Do not combine prescription gel, store-bought strips, bleaching lights, or other whitening products unless your dentist approves the combination. Excess exposure can increase sensitivity and soft-tissue irritation.

When to Stop and Call
Stop whitening and contact Bright Smiles for severe or lingering sensitivity, significant gum irritation, swelling, a cracked tooth, or pain focused in one tooth. A dental problem should be evaluated rather than masked by continuing whitening.

Personal Instructions, Follow-Up & Changes in Your Plan
Keep every follow-up visit Bright Smiles recommended for teeth whitening. Healing, fit, symptoms, and treatment needs can change over time, and the next step should be based on an examination rather than the calendar alone. If your clinician gave you instructions that differ from this general page because of your procedure, medical history, medication, restoration, or appliance, follow those personalized directions and contact us if anything is unclear.
Keep the review schedule Bright Smiles gives you. Follow-up for teeth whitening is used to check healing or tissue health, function and bite, home-care access, and the condition of any restoration or appliance; the interval may change with your individual risk and findings.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Teeth Whitening FAQs
How long will my teeth be sensitive after whitening?
Temporary tooth sensitivity is common and usually settles after treatment stops or the whitening interval is adjusted. Contact Bright Smiles if sensitivity is severe, persistent, or occurs without a clear trigger.
What if whitening gel gets on my gums?
Gel can irritate soft tissues. Remove excess gel as instructed, rinse if appropriate for your system, and use less at the next application. Persistent or significant tissue irritation should be reported.
Can I drink coffee or red wine after whitening?
Darkly colored foods and drinks can contribute to future staining. Follow any short-term restrictions for your whitening system and use reasonable stain-control habits afterward.
Why don't my crowns or fillings whiten with my teeth?
Whitening changes the color of natural tooth structure but does not predictably change the shade of existing crowns, veneers, or fillings. This can make shade differences more noticeable.
Can I leave whitening trays in longer to get faster results?
No. Use the concentration, amount, and wear time prescribed for your system. More gel or longer exposure can increase sensitivity and gum irritation without producing a better controlled result.
How can I make whitening results last longer?
Good brushing, professional cleanings, limiting tobacco and frequent staining exposures, and touch-up whitening only as directed can help maintain the result.

When Should I Call Bright Smiles?
Temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation can occur; call for severe pain, persistent gum injury, swelling, or a reaction that does not settle after stopping treatment.
Call sooner whenever something feels substantially different from the course your clinician described.
Get emergency medical help
