TREATMENT & AFTERCARE

Arestin Aftercare Instructions

Arestin is a locally delivered antibiotic containing minocycline that is placed directly into selected gum pockets, usually as an addition to scaling and root planing.

These instructions cover the essential home care, expected changes, warning signs, and follow-up for arestin. Your Bright Smiles clinician's instructions for your specific treatment, medicines, appliance, and medical history take priority.

Your personal instructions come first. Follow the instructions your Bright Smiles dentist or clinical team gave you for your specific treatment, medications, appliance, restoration, and follow-up schedule. Those directions take priority over general guidance on this page.

AFTERCARE VIDEO

Aftercare Guidance From Our Clinical Team

A Bright Smiles doctor or clinical team member reviews the most important instructions and what to expect after arestin.

What Was Placed

Arestin is a locally delivered antibiotic containing minocycline that is placed directly into selected gum pockets, usually as an addition to scaling and root planing. It is absorbed at the treatment site and does not need to be removed.

Your individual treatment can differ in extent, materials, medicines, and healing needs. Follow any specific instructions Bright Smiles gave you for arestin, and contact us rather than guessing if your experience is substantially different from what is described here.

Protect the Treated Sites

For the first week, do not touch or probe the treated gum pockets. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods on the treated teeth for one week. These are product-specific instructions, not general restrictions for every periodontal treatment.

Advance your diet according to comfort and the mechanical limits of the treatment—not simply because the area no longer hurts. For arestin, a restoration, appliance, implant, surgical site, or healing tissue can still be vulnerable before it feels vulnerable.

Flossing & Interdental Cleaning

Continue regular brushing, but do not use floss, dental picks, or other between-the-teeth cleaning devices at the Arestin-treated sites for 10 days after placement. Continue cleaning untreated areas normally unless Bright Smiles gave different instructions.

Use only the cleaning method that fits your arestin and its stage of healing. If an area cannot be cleaned without pain, bleeding, forcing a device, or disturbing healing tissue, stop and ask Bright Smiles to demonstrate the safest technique rather than improvising.

Pain, Swelling & Reactions

Contact Bright Smiles for persistent pain or swelling at a treated site. Seek prompt help for possible allergic symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling, or redness. Trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat requires emergency medical attention.

The overall trend matters: expected early symptoms should remain manageable and then improve. Pain or swelling that becomes substantially worse after beginning to improve, new drainage or a foul taste, fever, or symptoms that interfere with normal swallowing or breathing need prompt evaluation.

Medicines & Medical Information

Tell us about medication allergies, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, immune-system conditions, and significant health changes. Do not place or take additional antibiotics on your own; Arestin is part of a specific periodontal treatment plan.

Home Care After the Restricted Period

After the 10-day restriction at treated sites, resume the between-the-teeth cleaning method Bright Smiles recommends. Daily plaque control remains essential because Arestin does not replace brushing, interdental cleaning, or periodontal maintenance.

Re-Evaluation & Periodontal Maintenance

Keep the planned periodontal re-evaluation so we can measure how the treated pockets responded. Additional treatment may be needed at sites with persistent inflammation or deep pockets. Ongoing periodontal maintenance helps control recurrence.

Keep the review schedule Bright Smiles gives you. Follow-up for arestin is used to check healing or tissue health, function and bite, home-care access, and the condition of any restoration or appliance; the interval may change with your individual risk and findings.

Personal Instructions, Follow-Up & Changes in Your Plan

Keep every follow-up visit Bright Smiles recommended for arestin. Healing, fit, symptoms, and treatment needs can change over time, and the next step should be based on an examination rather than the calendar alone. If your clinician gave you instructions that differ from this general page because of your procedure, medical history, medication, restoration, or appliance, follow those personalized directions and contact us if anything is unclear.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Arestin FAQs

Why was Arestin placed in my gum pockets?

Arestin is a locally delivered antibiotic used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in selected periodontal pockets. It works in the treated site; it does not replace daily plaque control or periodontal maintenance.

When can I floss an Arestin-treated area?

Do not floss, use dental picks, or use other interdental cleaning devices at the treated sites for 10 days after placement unless your clinician specifically tells you otherwise.

Are there foods I should avoid after Arestin?

For one week, avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods at the treated teeth. Choose foods that do not traumatize the treated gum pockets.

Can I brush my teeth after Arestin is placed?

Yes. Continue regular brushing, using a gentle technique around treated areas. The restriction is on floss, dental picks, and similar interdental cleaning at treated sites for the first 10 days.

What symptoms should make me call after Arestin?

Call for significant swelling, rash or hives, difficulty breathing, severe or worsening pain, unusual drainage, or another reaction that concerns you. Emergency breathing or swallowing difficulty requires emergency care.

When will Bright Smiles check whether Arestin worked?

Arestin is part of periodontal therapy, so response is assessed during periodontal reevaluation and maintenance. Pocket depth, bleeding, tissue condition, and home care help determine the next step.
