TREATMENT & AFTERCARE

Clear Aligners Aftercare Instructions

Wear aligners consistently, keep teeth and trays clean, and respond early when a tray no longer fits or an attachment is lost.

Clear aligners move teeth through a prescribed sequence of removable trays. Successful treatment depends heavily on daily wear time, correct tray sequence, full seating, oral hygiene, and keeping scheduled monitoring visits.

Your personal instructions come first. Follow the instructions your Bright Smiles dentist or clinical team gave you for your exact procedure, medications, materials, appliance or restoration, and follow-up schedule. Those directions take priority over general guidance on this page.

AFTERCARE VIDEO

Aftercare Guidance From Our Clinical Team

A Bright Smiles doctor or clinical team member walks you through the most important aftercare instructions and what to expect after clear aligners.

Daily Wear & Changing Trays

Wear your aligners for the daily number of hours prescribed by Bright Smiles. Many full-time aligner plans require about 22 hours per day, but your own schedule controls. Remove them only for eating, drinking anything other than plain water, cleaning your teeth and trays, and other situations your clinician specifically approves.

Change to the next set only on the schedule you were given. If wear has been interrupted, the current tray is not fitting fully, or you are unsure whether to advance, stay in the current comfortable tray and contact us for guidance rather than skipping ahead on your own.

Eating & Drinking

Remove aligners for meals and snacks. Plain water is the safest drink while trays are in. Sugary or acidic drinks can become trapped against the teeth, increasing the risk of cavities and enamel damage, and hot liquids can distort some aligner materials.

After eating or drinking, clean your teeth before putting the trays back whenever possible. If you cannot brush immediately, rinse your mouth and the trays with water and clean thoroughly as soon as you can.

Cleaning Your Teeth & Aligners

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth every day. Trays can hold plaque and liquids against the teeth, so good home care matters throughout treatment.

Clean aligners using the method recommended for your aligner system and Bright Smiles. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, dishwashers, boiling, or other heat that can warp the plastic. Store trays in their case when they are out of your mouth—never loose in a napkin where they are easily lost or discarded.

Fit, Tracking & Seating

A new tray commonly feels snug and can cause mild pressure for a few days. It should still seat over the teeth as intended. Use any seating aid only as instructed by your team.

Contact us if a tray will not seat, a visible gap between the tray and a tooth persists or increases, an edge is causing a sore that does not improve, or the tray suddenly fits very differently. Do not trim, heat, reshape, or force a badly fitting tray unless Bright Smiles specifically directs you.

Lost, Cracked or Damaged Aligners

If an aligner is lost, cracked, warped, or badly damaged, contact Bright Smiles. Do not automatically skip to the next tray. Depending on where you are in treatment, we may advise you to wear the previous tray, move forward, or obtain a replacement.

Keep your most recent previous set unless your team tells you otherwise. Do not wear a tray with a sharp edge or major distortion that is injuring your mouth.

Attachments, Rubber Bands & Other Components

Small tooth-colored attachments help the trays apply specific forces. If one comes off, treatment does not always stop immediately, but tell us so we can decide when it should be replaced.

If rubber bands or another component are part of your plan, use them exactly as prescribed. Do not double the force or change the pattern yourself. Contact us if you run out, cannot attach them correctly, or a component breaks.

Pressure, Speech & Mouth Irritation

Mild pressure when starting a new tray is expected and usually settles. A temporary change in speech or extra saliva can also occur while you adapt. If needed, use a pain reliever that is safe for you according to the product label or your clinician's instructions.

Persistent severe pain, facial swelling, fever, a badly cut mouth, or pain focused in one tooth should be evaluated rather than assumed to be normal aligner pressure.

Finishing Treatment & Retainers

Do not decide on your own that treatment is finished because the teeth look straight. Bright Smiles needs to evaluate tooth position, bite, and tray fit before active treatment ends. Additional trays may sometimes be needed to complete planned movements.

Retainers are normally needed after active orthodontic treatment to help maintain the result. Wear and care for your retainers according to the schedule you are given; teeth can shift when retainers are not worn as directed.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Clear Aligners FAQs

How many hours a day should I wear my aligners?

Use the exact wear time prescribed by your orthodontic team. Consistent daily wear is essential; do not reduce the schedule because the trays feel comfortable.

Can I drink coffee with aligners in?

Plain water is generally safest while aligners are in place. Other drinks can stain trays or trap sugar and acid against teeth; remove the trays unless your clinician has given different product-specific instructions.

What if I lose an aligner?

Contact Bright Smiles rather than automatically skipping ahead. The correct step depends on where you are in the sequence and how long the tray has been worn.

What if my aligner does not fit all the way?

Use any prescribed seating method and contact the team if a visible gap persists or the tray will not seat. Continuing through trays while teeth are not tracking can compound the problem.

What if an attachment falls off?

Contact Bright Smiles. Some attachments are critical to planned tooth movement, and the team will determine whether and when it should be replaced.

Do I need retainers after clear aligners?

Usually yes. Teeth can move after active orthodontic treatment, so long-term retention is commonly required according to your prescribed schedule.

When Should I Call Bright Smiles?

Call if an aligner is lost, cracked, distorted, or will not seat; a persistent gap develops between tray and tooth; an attachment or elastic hook comes off; a tray causes significant tissue injury; pain is severe or worsening; or swelling or another dental problem develops. Seek urgent care for significant dental trauma, rapidly expanding swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a serious allergic reaction.

Call sooner whenever something feels substantially different from the recovery or treatment course your clinician described.

Get emergency medical help

Difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly expanding swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, a serious medication reaction, or another potentially life-threatening symptom requires emergency medical attention. Call 911 or seek emergency care.
