TREATMENT & AFTERCARE

Scaling & Root Planing Aftercare Instructions

Control tenderness and sensitivity while keeping the treated gums clean enough to heal and respond to periodontal therapy.

Scaling and root planing removes plaque, calculus, and bacterial deposits from below the gumline and smooths contaminated root surfaces. Gum tenderness, slight bleeding, and temporary temperature sensitivity can occur afterward, especially when deeper areas were treated.

Your personal instructions come first. Follow the instructions your Bright Smiles dentist or clinical team gave you for your exact procedure, medications, materials, appliance or restoration, and follow-up schedule. Those directions take priority over general guidance on this page.

Choose comfortable foodsIf chewing is tender, use softer foods temporarily and avoid foods that irritate recently treated gums.
Use prescribed products correctlyUse any antimicrobial rinse, desensitizing product, or medication only as directed.
Avoid tobaccoSmoking and vaping interfere with periodontal healing and increase the risk of disease progression.

AFTERCARE VIDEO

Aftercare Guidance From Our Clinical Team

A Bright Smiles doctor or clinical team member walks you through the most important aftercare instructions and what to expect after scaling & root planing.

What to Expect After Deep Cleaning

Your gums may feel tender and may bleed slightly when you brush or clean between your teeth during the first few days. Teeth can also feel more sensitive to cold, air, sweets, or touch for several days and sometimes longer.

As inflammation and swelling decrease, the gums may look slightly smaller and the teeth may appear longer or spaces may become more noticeable. This can happen as swollen tissue becomes healthier; it does not mean the cleaning removed healthy gum tissue.

Brushing & Cleaning Between Your Teeth

Daily plaque removal is a major part of treating gum disease. Brush gently but thoroughly with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Clean between your teeth every day with floss, interdental brushes, a water flosser, or another method your dental team recommended for your mouth.

Do not stop cleaning an area simply because it bleeds a little. Persistent or heavy bleeding, increasing pain, or swelling should be reported. If a specific area was treated surgically or received a locally placed medicine, follow the special instructions given for that site.

Tooth Sensitivity & Comfort

Temporary sensitivity is common after deposits are removed from exposed root surfaces. A toothpaste made for sensitive teeth may help when used consistently. Avoid extremely hot or cold foods if they trigger discomfort.

If you need pain relief, use only a medicine that is safe for you and follow your clinician's directions or the product label. Sensitivity that is severe, localized to one tooth, wakes you from sleep, causes pain when biting, or does not gradually improve deserves evaluation rather than being assumed to be normal gum healing.

Rinses, Medicines & Local Treatments

Most patients do not need the same medication plan. If Bright Smiles prescribed a mouth rinse, antibiotic, or other medicine, use it exactly as directed. Do not start leftover antibiotics or another person's prescription.

If medicine was placed directly into a gum pocket, follow the instructions you received for that product and area. Call if you develop increasing swelling, pus, fever, a medication reaction, or worsening pain.

Eating & Drinking

Wait until numbness has worn off before chewing so you do not accidentally bite your lip, cheek, or tongue. If your gums are tender, choose softer foods temporarily and chew on a comfortable area.

Very hot, spicy, sharp, or hard foods may irritate recently treated gums. Drink water regularly. Unless your clinician gave you a specific restriction, you can return toward your normal balanced diet as comfort allows.

Smoking, Vaping & Other Gum-Disease Risks

Smoking and other tobacco exposure make gum disease harder to control and can reduce the response to treatment. Avoid smoking and vaping and ask us for help with quitting if needed.

Diabetes control, dry mouth, certain medicines, plaque buildup, and other health factors can also affect gum health. Tell us about changes in your health or medications so your maintenance plan can be adjusted appropriately.

Re-Evaluation & Periodontal Maintenance

Scaling and root planing is active treatment for gum disease, not a one-time replacement for ongoing care. Your gums need time to respond before the result can be judged. At follow-up, we may recheck bleeding, inflammation, gum-pocket depths, plaque control, and areas that remain difficult to clean.

Some sites respond well to deep cleaning alone; others may need additional periodontal treatment. After active treatment, most patients with periodontitis need periodontal maintenance on an individualized schedule to help control recurrence.

Long-Term Gum Health

Gum disease can be controlled, but a history of periodontitis means the supporting tissues around your teeth need continued monitoring. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth every day, and keep the maintenance interval recommended for you.

Call before your scheduled visit if you notice new gum swelling, pus, a bad taste that persists, a tooth becoming loose, a new space opening between teeth, or pain that is getting worse. Earlier evaluation can prevent a small problem from becoming harder to manage.

RECOVERY AT A GLANCE

Scaling & Root Planing Care Timeline

Day of TreatmentWait for numbness to resolve before chewing, keep the mouth clean, and use comfortable foods if the gums are tender.
First Few DaysTenderness, slight bleeding, and temperature sensitivity should begin settling while daily plaque control continues.
Re-EvaluationYour periodontal response is reassessed after healing; additional treatment may be recommended for sites that remain diseased.
Ongoing MaintenancePeriodontal maintenance and daily home care help prevent recurrence and progression.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Scaling & Root Planing FAQs

Is bleeding normal after scaling and root planing?

Slight bleeding can occur, particularly during early brushing and interdental cleaning. Heavy, persistent, or spontaneous bleeding should be evaluated.

Why are my teeth sensitive after deep cleaning?

Removing deposits and reducing inflammation can expose root surfaces that are sensitive to cold, air, or touch. This often improves; persistent or severe sensitivity should be discussed with your clinician.

Should I stop flossing if my gums bleed?

Usually no. Plaque control is essential, and inflamed gums can bleed. Use the technique recommended by your clinical team and contact us if bleeding is heavy or home care is too painful.

When can I eat?

Wait until numbness has worn off. After that, eat as comfort allows and temporarily avoid foods that irritate tender gums.

Why do I need periodontal maintenance afterward?

Periodontal disease can recur. Maintenance visits allow professional disruption of bacterial deposits and monitoring of pockets, bleeding, mobility, and home care.

Will my gums grow back after treatment?

As inflammation resolves, swollen gums can shrink and recession may become more visible. Lost periodontal attachment and bone do not simply regrow from scaling and root planing alone.

When Should I Call Bright Smiles?

Call for heavy or persistent bleeding; facial or gum swelling that is increasing; fever; pus or drainage; severe or worsening pain; a medication reaction; or sensitivity or pain that is localized, severe, or not improving. Seek emergency care for rapidly expanding swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a serious allergic reaction.

Call sooner whenever something feels substantially different from the recovery or treatment course your clinician described.

Get emergency medical help

Difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly expanding swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, a serious medication reaction, or another potentially life-threatening symptom requires emergency medical attention. Call 911 or seek emergency care.
